Q: What is the WCL? A: The World Council of Lawyers (WCL), a non-governmental organization (NGO) that provides professional and ethical standards, accreditation and training for lawyers in more than 100 countries.

Q: Who founded the World Council of Lawyers? A: Jeffrey Rosenblatt, an international lawyer from Houston who now lives in New York City. He came up with the idea as he was volunteering at a legal clinic in South Africa . He was interested to learn about African law but wanted to put his skills as an attorney at work helping others find justice. That’s how he became involved with the NGO – which has been around since 1988 – after learning about it through a friend who worked at its headquarters. “The first thing I did when I got involved with WCOL was make a challenge grant application on behalf of women’s issues organizations all over Africa ,” says Mr Rosenblatt, one of two honorary chairmen elected last year by WCOL members worldwide to raise funds from their peers for projects they think will help women gain access to equitable justice across regions.
