To find the top states for patent lawyers, I looked at data from U.S. News & World Report on employment growth between 2008 and 2014. That period also includes the job losses suffered during the Great Recession that forced many law firms to cut back on employees. The states with the most patent-law jobs in 2014 were California, Texas, Massachusetts, Virginia and New York (all five of which are among my five favorite states).
But what about overall? After all, there are more than 400 million patents issued every year by federal agencies like the U.S. Patent Office or private companies like Apple , Amazon , Google , Microsoft or Samsung . What’s a good state for an inventor who wants to protect his idea while seeing it churned into products that people buy? There is no easy answer but some clues can be gleaned from this map:
