Best Learning Tool For New Lawyers?

The New York Times recently carried an article about Dr. James Garvey, a psychologist at the University of North Carolina, who has developed “the technical name for learning by doing.”

Dr. Garvey is conducting research on how law students learn best and using that knowledge to train prospective lawyers how to become better legal professionals. He’s working with former Supreme Court Justices Byron White and Sandra Day O’Connor to study every aspect of their personal lives so he can determine what they learned in school and apply those lessons in real-life situations.

“Lawyers are not born knowing everything there is to know about the law,” says Dr. Garvey, who specializes in human behavior rather than psychology or education as his colleagues do. “I’m providing them with good data on why they made the decisions they did on cases that were important.”
