The University of California admitted its first class of students to the law school in 1878, and by 1905 it was one of only six institutions nationwide granting a degree in legal training. Today, there are 31 law schools in the state with over 40,000 alumni throughout the country. UC Hastings College Of The Law is one of four professional schools which makes up the Golden Gate University (GGU). Founded in 1868, GGU started out as a teachers’ college for women before expanding into other areas such as nursing and business studies. In 1970 they changed their name to Golden Gate University; however they did not change their focus on education until 1991 when they opened their law school at Hastings College. Since then they have added graduate programs and undergraduate courses like philosophy and mass communications among others.
